Visual Supports

Spoken language disappears as soon as we say it. Visual information stays available.

Key Idea

A visual can reduce repeated verbal prompting and make expectations more predictable.

What This Can Look Like

Useful visuals might show: - a schedule - the steps of a task - First–Then - choices - how much work is left - a waiting cue - how to request help or a break

✓Try This

  • •Ask: “What information am I repeating verbally that I could make visible?” Then keep the visual simple enough for the student to actually use.

Keep in Mind

A visual support is only helpful if the student understands what it means. Teach the visual instead of simply displaying it.
