Supporting Transitions

Transitions can be difficult when they involve stopping something preferred, starting something uncertain, or shifting quickly between expectations.

Key Idea

Increase predictability before the transition occurs.

What This Can Look Like

Use: - advance notice - a visual schedule - a timer - a clear end point - First–Then - a transition object or routine when appropriate - a simple choice within the transition

✓Try This

  • •Before the transition, clarify: What is ending? What happens next? When will it happen? What support does the student have?

Keep in Mind

Repeatedly adding more verbal warnings is not always more helpful. Keep transition cues consistent, understandable, and meaningful for the student.
