Understanding Possible Functions & Influences

When the Pattern Isn’t Clear

Sometimes the data do not point to one clear explanation. That is useful information too.

Key Idea

Do not force an answer.

What This Can Look Like

Behavior occurs during difficult tasks sometimes, during peer interactions at other times, and occasionally with no obvious trigger or consistent outcome. The best current conclusion may simply be: “More information is needed.”

✓Try This

  • •Check whether you have: - enough observations - clear, observable descriptions - information about what happened immediately before - information about what happened immediately after - observations across different situations Also consider whether communication, physical discomfort, health, environmental factors, task difficulty, or predictability need further investigation.

Keep in Mind

Uncertainty is not failure. A cautious conclusion is more useful than a confident but unsupported one.
