Understanding Possible Functions & Influences

Access to Items or Activities

Behavior may sometimes occur when a preferred item, activity, turn, or privilege is unavailable or delayed.

Key Idea

Look for a repeated relationship between access being unavailable, the behavior occurring, and access being provided afterward.

What This Can Look Like

A preferred item is unavailable. The student grabs or demands it. The student then receives the item. If this happens repeatedly, access may be part of the pattern.

✓Try This

  • •Teach and reinforce skills such as: - requesting - waiting - accepting “not yet” - choosing an alternative - taking turns - checking when something will be available

Keep in Mind

The goal is not to eliminate wanting preferred things. Wanting access is normal. We want to teach an effective, appropriate way to communicate and cope when access is delayed.

Related Learning

Teaching Waiting

Waiting is a skill. Telling a student to “just wait” does not necessarily teach it.
